Bomarzo Day Trip from Rome: How to Get There, Tours and Itinerary
A day trip from Rome to Bomarzo is possible, but getting there requires more planning than the distance suggests. The main reason to visit is the Sacro Bosco, better known as Bomarzo’s Monster Park, a surreal Renaissance garden filled with monumental stone sculptures.
Driving is the simplest independent option. Without a car, you must choose between taking the train and arranging a taxi, relying on limited regional buses, or booking an organized tour from Rome.
I’ve visited Bomarzo twice: once independently and once on an organized tour. Based on those experiences, I’ll compare the options, explain how to get there and help you plan a realistic one-day itinerary.
Is Bomarzo Worth a Day Trip from Rome?
Yes, if you have already seen Rome's main sights and want a very different day outside the city. The appeal of Bomarzo is not one famous monument but the contrast between the Sacro Bosco's surreal stone figures, its wooded setting and the hill towns of northern Lazio.
I had seen the monsters in photos before visiting, but their scale and setting made them far more impressive in person.
The park works best as the centerpiece of the day, not the entire itinerary. Combine it with a walk through Bomarzo village or one nearby town, while resisting the temptation to fit several stops into a self-guided trip.
Bomarzo is especially suited to repeat visitors to Rome, photographers, Renaissance art lovers and families whose children are comfortable walking outdoors. It might not be the best choice if you have only two or three days in Rome and have not yet seen the city’s main landmarks. Travelers with significantly limited mobility should also consider another excursion, as much of the park involves sloping and uneven paths.
Bomarzo Day Trip from Rome: Visit Independently or Book a Tour?
Driving is the best option if you want to visit Bomarzo independently. Without a car, an organized tour is usually the easiest choice.
Option | Best for |
Drive | Travelers looking for maximum flexibility |
Organized tour | Travelers without a car who want the simplest option |
Train + prearranged taxi | Travelers who want to remain independent without driving |
Train + Cotral bus | Budget travelers willing to organize their day around public transportation |
When Should You Visit Bomarzo Independently?
Choose an independent trip if you want full control over how long you spend at the Monster Park and which nearby village you add. This option works best by car, especially when Bomarzo is the main focus of your day.
When I visited independently, I appreciated being able to explore the park without following a fixed schedule. Without a car, the same approach requires more planning and is better suited to travelers willing to arrange their own final transfer.
When Should You Book a Bomarzo Tour?
Book a Bomarzo tour from Rome if you do not have a car and want the transportation arranged, or if you plan to combine the Monster Park with several medieval villages in one day.
A tour removes the difficulty of organizing the final connection to the park, but you must follow a fixed itinerary and spend only the allocated amount of time at each stop.

Best Bomarzo Day Trips from Rome
If you prefer an organized day trip, these are my top recommendations based on their itineraries, time at the Monster Park, included transportation and departure point. My top pick gives you the most time in Bomarzo, while the alternatives prioritize either a small-group farm lunch or pickup from Civitavecchia.
My Top Pick: Bomarzo Monster Park and Medieval Villages Tour
I took this 7.5-hour private tour with my parents in July 2026. You spend 2.5 hours at the Monster Park and also visit Bassano in Teverina, Bomarzo village and Vitorchiano.
- What’s included: Round-trip transportation from Rome, entry to the Monster Park, a private vehicle, bottled water and onboard Wi-Fi.
- What I liked: Simone was both our driver and guide. He brought the medieval villages to life with his entertaining commentary and took us to several unexpected places that I would never have found on my own. This day trip is now one of my parents’ favorite memories from Rome.
- Best for: Couples and families without a car who want enough time at the Monster Park as well as several medieval villages.
- Pickup: Smaller groups normally meet at Cinecittà . Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for groups of four.
- Keep in mind: The tour is not suitable for children under 4, travelers with mobility impairments or adults over 80.

Other Bomarzo Tours Worth Considering
- Bomarzo Surreal Gardens, Medieval Viterbo & Farm Lunch : Best for a varied small-group day. This eight-hour tour includes pickup in Rome and is limited to eight participants. It combines one hour at Bomarzo with medieval Viterbo, a short stop in Sutri and a late farmhouse lunch, making it a good choice if you want several different experiences in the Tuscia countryside.
- From Civitavecchia: The Dying City and Bomarzo Monster Park Tour: Best for cruise passengers. This 7.5- to 8.5-hour shore excursion includes pickup and drop-off in Civitavecchia, transportation to Civita di Bagnoregio and the Monster Park, and admission to both sites. It does not depart from Rome and includes an English-speaking driver and guide.
How to Get to Bomarzo from Rome?
For an independent day trip, drive or combine the train with a taxi or bus for the final part of the journey. No train stops at the Monster Park: the most practical rail route uses Attigliano-Bomarzo and a prearranged taxi, while the fully public route connects through Orte and a Cotral bus.
Driving from Rome to Bomarzo
The drive from Rome usually takes around 1h15 to 1h45, depending on where you start and the traffic leaving the city.
- Route: Follow the A1 north, take the Attigliano exit and continue toward Bomarzo.
- Parking: Free parking is available near the entrance to the Monster Park.
If you do not already have a car, consider renting one for the day. Compare prices and pickup locations on this page, and choose an agency outside Rome’s historic center if possible to avoid the city’s ZTL restricted traffic zones.

Rome to Bomarzo by Train and Prearranged Taxi
Despite its name, Attigliano-Bomarzo station is not in Bomarzo. The train journey from Rome takes roughly 1h to 1h20, depending on the service, and the station is about 10 minutes by car from the Monster Park.
- Search on this website for trains from Roma Termini to Attigliano-Bomarzo on your travel date.
- Reserve a taxi or private transfer in both directions before leaving Rome.
- Agree on a pickup time at the park and leave enough time to catch your return train.
FANNY’S TIP: Reserve your return taxi at the same time as your outbound ride. Do not expect to find a taxi waiting at Attigliano-Bomarzo station or outside the Monster Park.
Rome to Bomarzo by Train and Cotral Bus
The official Sacro Bosco directions recommend traveling to Orte Scalo and continuing toward Bomarzo by bus. This is the cheapest fully public option, but the limited service determines how long you can spend at the park.
- Search Trenitalia for trains from Rome to Orte.
- Check Cotral for a bus between Orte station and Bomarzo on the same date.
- Confirm the return bus before choosing your outbound train and allow time to walk between the Bomarzo stop and the park.
Do not build your day around this route until both bus journeys are confirmed. Service is generally limited to Monday through Saturday, and you should not assume that a suitable Sunday connection will be available.

Bomarzo Monster Park Essentials for a Day Trip
Plan to visit the Monster Park in the morning if you want enough time for Bomarzo village or another town afterward.
- Tickets: Admission costs €19 for adults and €12 for children ages 4–13. You can buy tickets online (check last prices on this page) or pay by cash or card at the entrance.
- Opening hours: The park is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from November through February and from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM from March through September. In October, it closes at 6:00 PM during daylight saving time and at 5:00 PM during standard time. Last entry is one hour before closing. The park is closed on December 25.
- Accessibility: The park has uneven paths and stairs, and only around 10% of the monumental area is accessible to visitors with walking difficulties.
- Facilities: You will find a bar, restaurant, restrooms and picnic area at the park. The restaurant is open daily for lunch.

One-Day Bomarzo Itinerary from Rome
If you are driving, leave Rome around 8:00 AM and visit the Monster Park first. A realistic itinerary includes the park, lunch, Bomarzo village and one nearby town.
Time | Activity |
8:00 AM | Leave Rome |
9:30 AM–12:00 PM | Explore the Sacro Bosco |
12:00–1:00 PM | Have lunch or a picnic at the park |
1:15–2:30 PM | Walk through Bomarzo village |
3:00–4:00 PM | Visit Vitorchiano or Bassano in Teverina |
4:00–6:00 PM | Drive back to Rome |

1. Explore the Sacro Bosco
Allow 2 to 2.5 hours to explore the Sacro Bosco. The visit follows a marked route through a wooded hillside, with monumental stone figures, fountains and unusual buildings appearing along the paths.
Use the park map and follow the suggested route rather than walking directly between the most recognizable sculptures. This will help you see the complete garden without retracing your steps. Leave enough time to stop for photos, examine the details and read some of the inscriptions carved into the stone.
The Monster Park is the main reason for this day trip, so do not shorten your visit just to fit more villages into the afternoon.

2. Have Lunch at the Park or Bring a Picnic
Allow 45 to 60 minutes for lunch. You can eat at the park restaurant or bring your own food and use the designated picnic area. Eating is not permitted inside the monumental area.
3. Walk Through Bomarzo Village
Allow 60 to 75 minutes to explore Bomarzo’s historic center. Walk through its narrow medieval streets to Palazzo Orsini, then continue to the nearby Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The village is compact, so you can see its main landmarks without following a detailed route.
Palazzo Orsini normally opens to visitors from March through December on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If you are visiting on another day, plan to see the Renaissance exterior and check the municipal website before your trip if you hope to go inside.

4. Add One Nearby Village if You Are Driving
If you still have time, allow about one hour for either Vitorchiano or Bassano in Teverina. Choose one rather than trying to fit both into the afternoon.
- Vitorchiano: Choose it for its compact medieval center, dark peperino stone houses and fortified walls.
- Bassano in Teverina: Choose it for a quieter walk through its medieval streets and a view of the Clock Tower and Santa Maria dei Lumi.
FANNY’S TIP:If you are visiting without a car, keep the Sacro Bosco as your only fixed stop. Add Bomarzo village only if your confirmed return leaves you at least one full hour to explore. Skip Vitorchiano and Bassano in Teverina.Â

How Much Does a Bomarzo Day Trip from Rome Cost?
Use the estimates below for one adult, including park admission and €15 to €25 for food. Driving costs assume that two travelers share fuel and tolls.
Option | Transportation | Park ticket | Food and other costs | Estimated total |
Train + Cotral bus | €18–32 round trip | €15 | €15–25 | €48–72 |
Train + prearranged taxi | €52–74 round trip | €15 | €15–25 | €82–114 |
Drive with two adults | €18–23 per person for fuel and tolls | €15 | €15–25, plus a rental car if needed | €48–63 per person, excluding car rental |
Organized tour from Rome | Included | Included | Food | From €107 per person, plus food |
Check your train fare, taxi quote and tour price for your travel date, as these amounts can change. Sharing a taxi reduces the cost per person, but if you need a private transfer from Attigliano, compare the total self-guided cost with the price of an organized tour rather than looking at the train fare alone.
Other Day Trips from Rome to Consider
If you are still comparing destinations, these day trips offer a different experience:
- Choose an Orvieto Day Trip from Rome if you want a hill town that is easy to reach independently by direct train.
- Choose a Frascati Day Trip from Rome for a shorter food-and-wine day trip close to Rome.
- Choose an Assisi Day Trip from Rome for a longer day focused on medieval architecture, churches and religious history.
